Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
240 AM PDT Sun Apr 13 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Minor cooling today and Monday followed by more significant
cooling for the second half of the week. Low clouds and fog will
continue across the coastal areas and western valleys each night
and morning through the middle of next week. There is a 10 to 15
percent chance of light precipitation over the mountains Monday
night, and then a 15 to 25 percent chance for the mountains
westward at times Thursday night through Saturday.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
Satellite imagery shows low clouds have spread into the valleys,
including the far western and southern portions of the Inland
Empire. Elsewhere there were a few high clouds. Low clouds will
clear to the coast by late morning, though the beaches may remain
cloudy into the afternoon. Otherwise cooler today with highs 4-8
degrees above normal inland and near normal for the coastal areas.
Breezy onshore winds will develop below the passes and into the
deserts again this afternoon and evening. Little change in the
weather is expected on Monday with similar temperatures and marine
layer low clouds spreading into the western valleys once again.
The upper level low currently to our southwest will transition
into a negatively tilted open wave as it lifts northeast across
northern Baja and So Cal. This will bring additional cooling and a
deeper marine layer with low clouds filling in across most of the
coastal basin by Tuesday morning. There is marginal mid-level
moisture and instability with this wave. Several members of the
ensembles still show light precipitation with this feature, with
the best chances over the mountains Monday night. The marine layer
could deepen enough for drizzle west of the mountains.
Another closed low that develops off the coast by Tuesday morning
will slowly progress westward into CA by Wednesday, maintaining
cooler weather with a deep marine layer. Deterministic models
maintain their solution of a large closed low dropping south out
of Canada and into CA Thursday through Saturday, which is
supported by about 60% of the ensemble space. This would bring
much cooler weather, higher chances of precipitation with greater
amounts, and lower snow levels. The remaining members keep the
trough as an open wave that progresses eastward well to our north,
for less cooling and dry weather. Have maintained the 15-25%
chance of precipitation along and west of the mountains Friday and
Saturday, though confidence in amounts (if any) and snow levels
are still very low. The low, if it does drop this far south, is
forecast to progress eastward on Sunday for some warming and a
return of dry weather.

.AVIATION...
130930Z...Coasts/Valleys...Low clouds based 800-1200 ft MSL have
continued to slowly push further inland. The San Diego Valleys,
Orange County inland areas, and even the western fringe of the
Inland Empire are now filled in. Broken CIGs should move into KONT
in the next few hours. Vis 3-5 SM for inland valleys at times
through mid morning. Low clouds retreating to beaches 16-18Z Sun,
but patchy clouds will linger along parts of the immediate coast
through the day. Low clouds with similar bases will redevelop and
push inland again after 02Z Mon.
Elsewhere...Mostly clear skies with VFR conditions. Local west wind
gusts 25-35 kt over the mountains into the passes and deserts
through the early morning hours and again late this afternoon and
evening.
